We’re certainly now facing a new normal. As the world comes together to battle the Coronavirus pandemic, our daily lives are now dictated by social distancing and self-quarantine. These are just part of the sacrifices and adjustments that we have to make in order to support the amazing heroes in the frontlines and to do our part to help protect and save lives.
Perhaps at this point in time, our wardrobe isn’t exactly at the top of our priority list. However, it’s important to maintain a sense of normalcy and to adjust to the current work from home situation. Of course, our priorities are our physical and mental health, as well as that of our family, friends and wider community. However, those who are lucky to have work and are lucky enough to be able to work from home, must also prioritise their professional responsibilities. The keyword is being professional.
As tempting as it may be, working from home in pajamas just doesn’t cut it. Yes, perhaps, you’re on self-quarantine as you get the job done or perhaps you’re just getting on a conference call where really, only your upper body is seen. However, there’s something to be said about putting yourself in the right frame of mind and disposition for work. This, naturally, involves your attire. So, forget working in pajamas. There are still easy ways for you to look professional while staying comfortable as you work from home.
One of the simplest and easiest things you can do is to simply put on a dress shirt and trousers or even jeans. Ok fine, maybe even chino shorts if you’re in a warmer climate while on self-quarantine. Either way, no need for a necktie but the dress shirt will help you maintain that level of professionalism and make sure you’re ready for any impromptu conference calls that may just occur.
If you have a naturally more relaxed work environment and consequently, a more laidback office dress code as well, you can consider wearing a plain coloured t-shirt with a blazer or a casual jacket over it. You can also wear this look with either custommade trousers or jeans or yes, chino shorts. It’s a smart casual look that also works as a work from home outfit.
Remember that your outer appearance is also a reflection of your current mood and attitude. Now more than ever, you want your colleagues to know that you’re up to the task of getting the job done and that they can count on you especially during these uncertain and unsettling times. “I never wear clothes at home” is definitely not the mentality you want to take, not just when you now have to work from home, but also now when everyone’s health and well-being is a top priority. Don’t leave yourself exposed and unprepared – in more ways than one.
