How to Fold a Pocket Square

The pocket square, once known as the handkerchief, is now a symbol of sophistication for well-dressed men worldwide. Whether paired with a full suit or just a blazer, a pocket square adds a refined touch to any outfit. Remember, your pocket square should complement the colors of your tie but avoid matching it exactly.

Rule #1

The pocket square enhances your attire without directly matching any other element, creating a visually appealing contrast.

Avoid this common mistake: Matching your pocket square and tie in the exact same fabric or pattern can look overly coordinated and less stylish.

1. One Peak/Point Fold

  1. Lay your pocket square flat with one corner pointing up and another pointing down.

  2. Fold the bottom corner up onto the top corner.

  3. Fold the left corner to the center.

  4. Just like in step 3,  fold the right corner to the center.

one pocket fold

When to wear: Suitable for both business and casual settings.

Difficulty level: Easy

Recommended Fabrics: Best with cotton or linen for a crisp finish.

2. Two Peak/Point Fold

  1. Lay your pocket square flat.

  2. Fold one side over so it creates a triangle. To create the two separate points at the top, it’s important the two corners do not align.

  3. Fold the left side towards the right, and then the right corner towards the left corner.

Two peal

When to wear: Business or Casual

Difficulty level: Advanced

Recommended fabrics: Cotton or linen

3. Three Peak/Point Fold

  1. Lay your pocket square flat with one corner facing up and one corner facing down.

  2. Fold the bottom corner up (as step #2 in Two Peak Fold) so the corners are close, but do not align.

  3. Now it’s time to create the third tip: fold the left corner towards the right and towards the “middle peak”.

  4. Then fold the right bottom corner straight across to the left corner.

Three pocket

When to wear: Ideal for business or dressier casual events.

Difficulty level: Advanced

Recommended fabrics: Cotton or linen

4. Presidential/Square fold

  1. Lay the pocket square flat.

  2. Fold the pocket square in half.

  3. Fold the left side over the right side.

  4. Fold the bottom part up; how much you will fold depends on how deep your jacket pocket is.

Presidebntial Fold

When to wear: Formal events or casual ones needing a subtle addition.

Difficulty level: Easy

Recommended fabrics: Cotton or linen for a smooth, flat appearance.

5. The Puff Fold

  1. Lay your pocket square flat.
  2. Pinch the center and lift it.
  3. Lightly grasp near the center with your other hand.
  4. Slide it through your hand, adjusting to get the right puffiness.
  5. Tuck the folded part into your pocket, adjusting for a natural pouf.

Puff fold

When to wear: Casual settings where a more relaxed style is appropriate.

Difficulty level: Easy

Fabrics: Cotton, linen, or silk for a soft, draping effect.
